Research increasingly demonstrates that autistic individuals experience disproportionately high rates of trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms compared with the general population. Emerging evidence suggests that more than half of autistic adults may meet criteria for probable PTSD during their lifetime, while autistic women and gender-diverse individuals experience particularly high rates of interpersonal victimization and trauma. Autistic traits such as social vulnerability, difficulty identifying manipulation, chronic invalidation, sensory overwhelm, masking, and repeated experiences of exclusion may increase susceptibility to traumatic stress.

This neuroaffirming webinar examines the complex overlap between autism and PTSD, highlights differential diagnosis challenges, explores ethical considerations surrounding unmasking, and provides trauma-informed treatment adaptations for autistic clients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:

*Apply trauma-informed and neuroaffirming treatment adaptations for autistic clients.
*Describe the relationship between autism and trauma exposure.
*Differentiate between autism characteristics and PTSD symptoms.
*Explain how autism-related experiences may function as traumatic stressors.
